Patients welcome the opportunity to communicate with their physicians by email. Physicians, on the other hand, have reservations about meeting their patients in cyberspace.

A survey taken by Lightspeed Research found that patients are willing to use email to communicate with their physicians, provided that the service is free of charge.

Physicians readily endorse ongoing interaction with patients. Yet, postings on Medscape Physician Connect (MPC), an all-physician discussion board, voice concerns that email communication with patients involves a number of questions with regard to liability, quality of care, HIPAA compliance, efficiency, and compensation for services that have yet to be resolved.

According to a Medscape poll, 28% of respondents do not want to provide free services, 27% are uncertain whether email is time-efficient, 38% fear malpractice suits, and 6% are suspicious of change.
