Implanting heart failure patients with a new device to monitor pulmonary artery pressure, involving wireless sensing communications technology, resulted in a 30 % reduction in heart failure hospitalisations at six months and a 38 % reduction in annualized (taking into account the entire follow up period averaging 15 months, calculated as an annual rate of decrease) in heart failure hospitalisations, reports the CHAMPION trial at the Heart Failure Congress 2010 in Berlin. The study also showed reductions in pulmonary arterial pressures for patients implanted with the monitoring device, increases in the number of days alive and outside hospital and improvements in quality of life.
